A company’s IT organization began receiving reports that customers could not login to their accounts through its web portal gateway. The error prevented the company's new and returning customers from ordering products, updating their profiles, tracking shipments, and performing additional tasks. The portal was the primary customer-facing access point to the company’s proprietary e-commerce application. The application was challenging to troubleshoot because it was split-hosted—with databases in a colocation facility and front and back-end services in Oracle Cloud—and developed using internal and vendor-provided application development tools and frameworks. This issue could not have occurred at a worse moment for the company, which was experiencing a seasonal upswing in sales from well-received new product releases.
