The Situation
A multi-billion dollar global professional services firm focusing on risk and insurance services headquartered in the United States currently uses Arbor Edge Defense (AED) in data center locations globally to provide DDoS protection. The initial push for the AED devices was to provide protection for the VPN gateways facing the Internet. This was a direct result of the recognition that if their VPN gateway IP addresses were attacked, it would disrupt the work-from-home employees affecting productivity. In addition, Arbor Cloud provides Carrier Agnostic global DDoS protection along with automated signaling from the AED devices in each location to augment DDoS attack management and mitigation with Arbor Cloud™.
The Details
With the onset of the Coronavirus outbreak, the consulting firm wanted all global employees to work from home and use VPN to access their data centers, which led to upgrades in the internet circuits to handle the anticipated increase in traffic. This increase in traffic will also expand the threat landscape within the organization’s network. The AED devices protect locally until the Internet bandwidth is consumed and then automatically signals Arbor Cloud for cloud-based DDoS attack mitigation. As a result, AED mitigation capacity needed to be upgraded along with the internet circuits to correspond with the increase in VPN traffic. Since the company had AED 2600’s, this was simply a software license upgrade to go from 5G to 10G and was simplified by the fact that NETSCOUT® has global procurement in UK, Canada, LATAM, and Australia as well as US to support them.
The Results
The increased DDoS management and mitigation capacity provides the organization and their employees confidence that they will be protected from DDoS attacks that can disrupt their business activity and even damage the organization’s reputation while temporarily working from home. The organization was satisfied with the flexibility of the AED license configuration and the ability of NETSCOUT to execute on a global procurement effort quickly and to the organization’s crisis timeline.
