Customer Profile

One of the largest financial institutions in Eastern Europe was in the process of a rebranding effort while restarting relationships with millions of clients worldwide. During this project, they could not afford any compromises or reputational risks. To ensure this outcome, they created a cybersecurity risks prevention team within their Security Operation Center. The Key Performance Indicators for the success of this team were:

  • Zero losses in Revenue and Zero Increases in Costs Due to DDoS Attacks
  • Zero Service Downtime Due to DDoS Attacks
  • 100% DDoS Attack Mitigation

The Challenge

During the last year as the project was progressing the institution experienced a massive DDoS attack that crippled over 90% of their customer facing IT capabilities and put the Key Performance Indicators for the new Cybersecurity Risks Prevention team in jeopardy. This triggered the perception within the organization that DDoS Attacks were a high threat to customer facing services. This supported the need to prioritize DDoS attack protection. The attack was eventually mitigated but left the network with depleted resources and limited high availability of business critical, customer facing services for several days.

The organization put out an RFI to educate themselves about the variety of DDoS protection products, strategies and solutions that were being practiced within their industry. Of the multiple applications only three vendors were asked to enter the proof-of-concept testing phase.

The Solution

The NETSCOUT team introduced the organization to Sightline with the Threat Mitigation System during the testing phase. No other vendor could provide the onpremise power of Sightline and TMS to block the largest DDoS attacks generated during the testing process. By identifying and mitigating test attacks mirroring the size of the attack the organization had already endured, NETSCOUT raised the bar far above the reach of any competitors and gave confidence to the customers Security Operations Center staff that their mission critical services would be protected from future DDoS Attacks by the NETSCOUT Solution.

Summary

Due to the implementation and configuration of NETSCOUT Sightline with TMS, the organization is seeing a rise in reliability of IT systems even in the face of increases in cybercrime rates including DDoS attacks. The institution saw increases of 85% in attempted thefts of customer funds while also seeing a year over year 25% increase in DDoS attacks recorded. In fact, over the last year the NETSCOUT Solution has mitigated 100% of identified DDoS Attacks (90 +) and has proven that it can manage attacks of up to 160 Gbps (A fourfold increase year over year) resulting in 0 minutes of downtime and 0 financial losses from client accounts both meeting critical Cybersecurity Risks Prevention Team metrics.
