nGenius Network Performance Management Solution for VoIP 
The nGenius® Performance Management solution is a vital tool for helping enterprises manage and optimize their IP telephony solutions in converged networks. It provides the flexibility to:

As Voice-over-IP (VoIP) moves from test to full-blown implementations in more and more organizations, the ability to distinguish, track and protect voice traffic -- as well as mission-critical and revenue-affecting applications -- becomes paramount. Having integrated tools for monitoring and troubleshooting performance of your voice and application traffic simultaneously is essential.

The NetScout Solution leverages rich, actionable information to provide the visibility and control necessary for monitoring, troubleshooting, and planning for VoIP technologies both in the corporate LAN or across your MPLS WAN.

VoIP Network Performance Management Challenges 
IT organizations wrestle daily with the challenges and implications of converging VoIP traffic with existing business applications in the core, distribution, and access areas of the network.

Voice-over-IP traffic:

  • adds further complexity to already complex enterprise networks
  • can easily overwhelm existing network resources if not managed judiciously
  • is a real-time application and is therefore sensitive to delay, jitter and packet loss
  • requires proper traffic prioritization (QoS) to ensure other applications do not contend with voice-allocated bandwidth

Managing VoIP Effectively with the NetScout Solution  
The nGenius Performance Manager uses NetScout’s unique CDM technology to structure and track individual IP-based voice and video traffic flow metrics. It provides a deeper look into the network, enabling IT managers to:

  • compare in real time VoIP traffic flows with those of other applications to manage bandwidth and fine tune ongoing performance,
  • set proper QoS policies for voice and data applications,

Support for Cisco and Avaya VoIP Implementations 
In addition to supporting standards based voice and call set up protocols such as RTP, RTCP, MGCP, SIP, and H.323, the nGenius VoIP management solution also supports Cisco implementations using the SCCP call set up protocol, and Avaya's Extended H.323 call set protocol that appears as Q.931 in the NetScout Solution.

The top window shows voice quality metrics such as call jitter, packet loss percentage, and setup times to monitor VoIP performance. The second window provides information with which to validate codec and voice traffic prioritization configurations.

 VoIP Customer Story 
A large financial institution in the Southwest with over 100 bank centers had deployed VoIP between its head office and remote data center and was using a management tool they thought would give them visibility into the voice traffic. Voice quality problems soon emerged but they were unable to determine whether it was the service provider, their own network, or an infrastructure problem.

The NetScout Solution was brought into the situation and was immediately able to identify the problem. Routers in the data center were mis-configured and were improperly queuing information. Once the problem was fixed, response times returned to normal and the company was able to realize the full potential of its IP-based phone system.
