Coaching Needed to Clear Network Operations Hurdles

Survey highlights the top 3 barriers to communication service provider success with AI.

As part of a recent survey conducted by Mobile World Live, communications service providers (CSPs) were asked to weigh in on the state of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and the challenges they face when deploying AI for IT operations (AIOps) in the network. Their responses, published in a 34-page report, offer critical insights into network management, network security and performance, commercial advantages, customer care, voice services, and user experience.

With McKinsey estimating AI revenue growth to $680 billion by 2040 from the inevitable expansion into the telecom sector, the report also suggests that CSPs will need to overcome three major barriers to achieve AIOps deployment success.

  • Barrier 1: Lack of quality data on user experience and network performance
  • Barrier 2: Lack of machine learning (ML)/AI knowledge within the organization
  • Barrier 3: Multivendor silos

Better Data Yields Best Results

Outlining the importance of an unbiased data source that can accurately reflect the customers’ experience, the Mobile World Live report recommends AI partners that leverage data collection and processing at the source. By actively avoiding solutions that strain network resources with voluminous data backhauling and data lakes of unmanageable depths, CSPs can benefit from a laser-focused subset of ”smart data.”

Regarding keeping the network safe and performing, the report also showcases solutions with integrated AI/ML technologies bolstered by user plane monitoring capabilities as a preferred way to improve an organization’s productivity around network performance and to protect the user experience. Armed with this type of solution, CSPs can reduce time to knowledge, characterize customer behavior, optimize new services, proactively manage 5G service-level agreements (SLAs), and raise net promoter scores (NPSs).
