Practicing The 3 R’s of Cybersecurity
Welcoming Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026
With the arrival of October, we welcome Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This year’s theme is “Securing the Next 250,” in celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday. In addition to the traditional four core steps of avoiding and reporting phishing, using strong passwords, leveraging multifactor authentication, and keeping software up to date, 2026 emphasizes the “3 R’s of cybersecurity” for those who operate or own critical infrastructure. The 3 R’s are defined as:
- Reduce attack surface
- Replace end-of-support devices
- Recover quickly to sustain operations
Reduce Attack Surface
Having a smaller attack surface means there is less real estate for adversaries to exploit to gain access to the network. Network visibility is key to ensuring that all areas are monitored, but that is only one component. Having up-to-date applications helps close vulnerabilities, making it more difficult for bad actors to find exploits. Enabling zero trust, paired with comprehensive network visibility, empowers organizations to monitor east-west traffic between network segments while assuming no implicit trust, helping find users and devices that access network areas they should not. Policy enforcement that is rooted in real network behavior across both internal and hybrid environments, not just the control plane, gives security teams the data and visibility needed to investigate anomalies and respond quickly.
Replace End-of-Support Devices
Outdated devices, especially those without ongoing support, are a gold mine for adversaries. Without regular security patches and updates, bad actors can exploit these devices to bypass even the most robust network security stacks. These backdoors act as easy entry points into the network and need to be closed and replaced with new, actively supported devices to reduce the chances of a breach.
Recover Quickly to Sustain Operations
When a breach does occur, swift recovery helps minimize the damage and data exposure and returns operations to normal for users and employees with minimal interruption. Having the visibility, data, and intelligence needed for efficient threat investigation and threat hunting at the security team’s fingertips is imperative in accomplishing this goal. The faster a breach is identified, knowledge is gained, and an investigation can occur, the sooner recovery can begin. Minimizing downtime can pay dividends in regards to lost revenue, reputational damage, and penalties.
Network Visibility to Protect the World’s Largest Networks
NETSCOUT provides enterprises with the comprehensive network visibility needed to accomplish these goals. The “3 R’s of cybersecurity” can be monitored, improved, and activated more effectively with NETSCOUT Smart Data powered by deep packet inspection (DPI) at scale, which provides security teams with real network data that can see connections in and out of the network. NETSCOUT Omnis Cyber Intelligence leverages packet-level insights to enable detailed threat investigations, closing the gap between detection and response.
