Intro to nGenius Performance Management for Users (2-Day) is a two-day instructor-led
training course using nGenius Performance
Manager. This introductory course provides
students with the fundamental knowledge
and skills needed to effectively monitor,
analyze, and report on application usage
and performance in large enterprise-wide
networks. The training will prepare
students to apply monitoring and troubleshooting
techniques through hands-on exercises
and instructor-led challenges. This
course is conducted only by NetScout
instructors at locations that meet our
technical requirements.
End users
Participants should have a basic understanding of networking concepts prior to attending this class.
Course Content Outline - End User-Level
Training
Day 1
Module 1 - nGenius Performance Manager
and Data Sources
Data sources, especially NetScout probes,
provide performance data and visibility
into enterprise-wide networks. Data sources
serve as the foundation for all real-time
and historical data used to proactively
monitor, troubleshoot, and manage enterprise-level
networks. This module provides an overview
of nGenius Performance Manager and the
data sources within the network.
Upon completion, participants should be
able to:
- Identify nGenius Performance
Manager components and capabilities
- Understand how nGenius Performance
Manager operates within the network
- Summarize the types of data sources
available in the network
Module 2 - Getting Started with nGenius Performance
Manager
An overall understanding of nGenius Performance
Manager and its functions will benefit
students that are new to the product, as
well as those that work closely with nGenius Performance Manager Administrators. This
module provides a complete high-level overview
including a brief review of the administrative
tasks required to configure and manage
the nGenius Server.
Upon completion, participants should be
able to:
- Successfully access nGenius Performance
Manager and navigate the nGenius Home
Page
- Summarize important administrative
tasks (global administrators)
- Navigate the Performance Manager Console
- Launch views to monitor and analyze
network performance data
- Generate an on-demand Ad Hoc report
- View and navigate NewsPaper-style reports
Module 3 - Working with Performance Manager
Console Views
A familiarity with the various Performance
Manager Console views is essential for
quick and effective problem resolution.
This module is designed to help students
recognize the value and breadth of real-time
and historical performance data available
within the Performance Manager Console.
Upon completion, participants should be
able to:
- Identify key view attributes
- Display real-time and historical data
- Differntiate between snpashot and over
time views
- Change view resolution, drill down
on a single data point, change metrics,
etc.
- Create and schedule Ad Hoc reports
- Setup and perform port spanning to
troubleshoot applications
Day 2
Module 4 - Customizing Your Work Environment
It’s important to understand how
to tailor the Performance Manager Console
work environment to suit individual needs.
This module focuses on how to modify view
contents and display characteristics to
make the most out of nGenius Performance
Manager Console Workspaces and views.
Upon completion, participants should be
able to:
- Modify view contents and display characteristics
through Preferences
-
Use nGenius Console workspaces to effectively
manage views
-
Create and launch QuickViews for monitoring
and troubleshooting
Module 5 – Troubleshooting with
Packet Capture and Analysis Tools
A thorough understanding of how to use
packet analysis tools to capture, decode,
and share trace files is critical for troubleshooting
and detailed analysis. This module focuses
on the use of packet capture and analysis
to perform packet-level troubleshooting.
Upon completion, participants should be
able to:
- Summarize methods for launching packet
captures
- Conduct packet captures and decodes
to analyze packets
- Create and apply pre- and post-capture
filters
- Open, export, and share trace files
Module 6 – Monitoring Response
Time
Application response time is a key performance
indicator that helps identify the source
of network and application performance
problems. Students will gain a detailed
understanding of response time measurements
and techniques for monitoring and troubleshooting
poor application performance.
Upon completion, participants should be
able to:
- Understand how response time is calculated
using NetScout probes
- Use response time views to isolate
problems by determining the source of
response time issues
- Evaluate response time data to gauge
the health of the network and application
servers
NetScout will provide morning and afternoon beverages/snacks.
