The Need for Automated Behavioral Analysis 
Today’s high speed, global networks are host to complex, revenue-carrying financial trading services, virtualized, web-based order processing applications, patient-care electronic records and medical images, and converged, latency-intolerant voice and video. The importance of these business services cannot be understated – they represent millions of dollars in client portfolios, high-value product revenue, safe and rapid patient treatment, and quality phone conversations with customers and partners. Disruptions as minor as millisecond delays, or as dramatic as hours of complete application unavailability can mean severe financial loss, irreparable customer dissatisfaction, or even health implications.

However, IT organizations often find themselves reacting to end-user reports of application slowdowns. In the strict “up, down, broken” analysis of the elements of the network, everything looks fine. And yet, the end-user’s experience is still poor. In fact, many users may be affected by the situation. IT organizations need a solution that leverages automated behavioral analysis to minimize or avoid the impact that these service degradations and disruptions have on the end user and the business.

Detecting Service-impacting Issues with the nGenius Service Assurance Solution 
Baselining is the process of measuring “normal” network and application behavior so that future anomalous behavior can be determined. However, this can become a cumbersome task when you factor in all the variables that define normal behavior. Network traffic is continuously changing – from day to day, week to week, even season to season – making it tricky to establish what is anomalous and what is normal for any given day and time.

Automated behavioral analysis learns a network’s normal historical patterns of behavior, and then compares the current activity to the baseline to identify changes in network activity without the manual configuration and guesswork of setting thresholds. When an anomaly is discovered, an alert is triggered in nGenius Service Assurance Solution. IT organizations can increase application availability with earlier warning and by linking the alarms with detailed diagnostics information empower network and operations managers to resolve issues before users are impacted.

Automated behavioral analysis allows IT organization to:

  • Identify abnormal increases and decreases in physical and virtual link utilization, application utilization, application response time and VoIP quality.
  • Associate anomalous traffic with offending applications to focus troubleshooting efforts and shorten mean time to repair.
  • Identify short-lived problems, intermediate-term issues, and hard-to-catch, long-term performance drifts.
  • Provide increased visibility into all monitored interfaces, including trunks, virtual interfaces, sites and QoS levels.
  • Combine related anomalies into a single, intelligent alert to streamline the process of diagnosing multiple alerts generated from the same root cause

The Alert Details tab provides information on the problem severity, problem type, interfaces affected, time the problem was detected and a detailed description of the problem. Additionally, it provides graphical evidence of the events leading up to the anomaly. Double clicking on the Evidence Chart brings you into nGenius Performance Manager for additional troubleshooting details.
