The Challenges of Monitoring Encrypted Networks
Encrypted networks are a cost-effective method for government agencies to communicate securely with regional offices, bases, and remote field locations worldwide. Increasingly, the IT staff at military and civilian agencies are deploying encryption technologies to deliver private, sensitive, or top-secret information across the government’s wide area network.
Application-level visibility into encrypted networks is a major challenge for government IT organizations. While the technology secures network traffic and packets, it also obscures the detailed data most network professionals require for troubleshooting and traffic engineering.
The NetScout Solution and Site Monitoring
NetScout’s Performance Management Solution offers a number of key features to monitor application traffic flows in encrypted network environments. The NetScout Solution’s Site Monitoring feature provides visibility through multiple WAN cloud technologies, including encrypted and/or VPN deployments, including AES, DES, TDEA, IPsec.
Typically the WAN router at a government facility applies the encryption algorithm at one of the endpoints. When this happens, the trunk connected to that router at the point of demarcation will be obscured, making WAN-side application-level visibility difficult, if not impossible. By deploying nGenius Probes on the LAN side of the network and using the subnet address or IP addresses assigned to the remote locations, Site Monitor overcomes the challenge of viewing application flow details in encrypted networks.
