NetScout Wins the Gold in Applications and Network Management

Readers responding to the SearchNetworking.com 2008 Product Leadership Awards survey rated Sniffer Application Intelligence from NetScout as the best product designed to handle the dual job of measuring applications while also keeping tabs on network performance. NetScout recently acquired Network General, along with its venerable Sniffer and associated line of products. The Application Intelligence product identifies commercial and custom applications based on their packet flow signatures, breaks out clients and servers to see who is using the network, and provides time intervals to help identify when problems and anomalies occur. It provides data on the source, destination, application, time and interface of conversational flows, allowing applications to be analyzed based on the metrics you deem most important.

The Know — are you in?
NetworkWorld IT Roadmap

Not knowing the details of a network problem makes troubleshooting a daunting task. Not knowing the performance of your critical web applications is like flying your business blind. Not knowing what effect your new telepresence initiative is having on your daily business is a careless gamble.

Your most reliable alerts for performance issues are coming from your end-users. Listen to your network tell you what the real story is instead – enjoy the privileges of being in the know.

Get in the know. Know first. Know where. Know why.

Sniffer Financial Intelligence Solution Version 4.2
Using Threshold Overlays in nGenius Performance Manager 4.3

With the release of Sniffer Financial Intelligence version 4.2, NetScout continues its commitment to financial services firms around the world. Our Sniffer Financial Intelligence solution powered by nGenius InfiniStream™ provides predefined and customizable graphical views for analysis of multicast data streams and FIX-based order flows.

Out of the box, Sniffer Financial Intelligence identifies financial multicast channels {Source, Group} as individual applications, capturing transaction details on utilization, volume, conversation, and users, to ensure reliable market data feeds and distribution.

The Sniffer Financial Intelligence solution also includes an array of performance metrics for latency monitoring and analysis of FIX-enabled transactions and trade order flows. The FIX Intelligence module enables financial IT managers to effectively troubleshoot FIX transaction performance, determine latencies for all FIX transactions, and optimize algorithmic trading applications. These new views and panels now give IT departments of global financial institutions the ability to:

  • Troubleshoot and optimize the speed and efficiency of market data distribution and trading
  • Provide latency and performance measures to optimize algorithmic trading applications
  • Drill down into market movements and asset classes and optimize systems and networks for them
  • Efficiently monitor and support order routing, settlement, and clearing networks and systems

In nGenius Performance Manager 4.3, we introduced the ability to display threshold lines on all Over Time charts (e.g., Response Time, Link Usage, Applications, Host, Conversation, etc.). The benefits of adding thresholds to your charts and reports include:

  • The viewer can more readily pinpoint where and when a threshold has been exceeded

  • Network operations can easily communicate network conditions to management or other constituents by providing an easily identifiable reference point

This link usage screenshot displays both a threshold overlay (90%) and alarm overlay, enabling any viewer to quickly and easily identify issues.

To find out more about adding threshold lines, please refer to the nGenius Performance Manager 4.3 Help.

  IP Videoconferencing/Telepresence Survey
Your Modern IP Network is...
Modern IP Network

Lately there has been much buzz about telepresence – IP videoconferencing technology that makes you “feel as if you were actually there” at the remote location. But, while the technology is certainly exciting and promises great benefits in this time of rising fuel costs, NetScout’s concern is with the potentially huge demands telepresence places on the network – we’ve heard estimates ranging anywhere from 5-20MBs.

Please take five minutes to answer this short survey about your current and planned use of IP videoconferencing. All respondents who complete the survey will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a $75 iTunes gift certificate.

Congratulations to Igor Eydlin, winner of the February ITIL survey drawing!

This Jim Metzler IT Impact Brief is the first in a set of four briefs leading up to the Interop conference in Las Vegas at the end of April. This brief will focus on the need for packet flow data for efficient network performance management.

This is the second of Jim Metzler’s IT Impact Briefs leading up to Interop and continues to identify how network managers can successfully manage application performance. This brief describes how organizations can effectively and efficiently troubleshoot a wide range of network and application issues using three general categories of management data collection: flow collection, distributed monitoring, and continuous capture.
