BNP Paribas Equities and Derivatives Banks on Network General

Crucial Financial Transactions Run Smoother Thanks to Network Evaluation System

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Network General™ Corporation, the leading provider of IT Service Assurance solutions today announced that one of the world’s largest international banking networks, BNP Paribas Equities and Derivatives, has chosen the Sniffer® Infinistream™ product, Network General’s network analysis solution, to ensure the smooth running of key transactions at the bank’s French operation.

Network General and its partner, NetQuality, have spent several months working with the bank to identify the best system to ensure financial traders have access to the right information at the right time. Central to the requirement, is the ability for traders to simultaneously deliver information to multiple investment banks throughout the day, using live feeds called ‘multicasts’.

“Financial information is very critical and time sensitive. One missed or delayed packet of data can cause huge problems for our traders.” said Arnaud Huret of BNP Paribas. “The multicast data we receive tends to arrive in ‘spikes’ rather than a steady stream. As a result, our systems must be able to handle the information quickly and efficiently. A delay of just five minutes could result in losses of approximately $350,000.”

Another key benefit of Network General’s technology, from BNP Paribas’ perspective, is the Sniffer Infinistream product’s ability to capture and store detailed information regarding traffic passing through its network. This critical information provides a good overview of the system and enables the IT department to quickly identify the root cause of the problems.

BNP Paribas had previously been using a software only version of Network General’s Sniffer Distributed product. As the bank’s IT needs grew, management decided to upgrade and once again turned to Network General for support. With the Infinistream solution, the IT team can now identify and troubleshoot issues across the network quickly revealing ‘the big picture’, significantly reducing the involvement of costly management resources.

“The Infinistream product is specifically designed so that the customer can, at any point, go back and analyze the traffic and data at the time its users were experiencing issues, and determine whether the problem was an application or a network issue,” said Faouzi Lajri, regional director of southern Europe. “In the case of BNP Paribas, we recognized that this was exactly the functionality the bank required, as its IT team were constantly having to recreate problems in order to identify them, wasting valuable time and money in the process.”

Once the Infinistream solution is fully implemented, the IT team at BNP Paribas intends to use the improved data to provide senior management with reports on key findings and graphics for use in overall business and capacity planning.
