Network General Provides Vanderbilt University With The Highest Levels Of Network Performance And Security

World Renowned University Adds Sniffer InfiniStream Product to Portfolio of Solutions

SAN JOSE, CALIF., August 22, 2006 – Network General™ Corporation, the global leader in providing dashboard to packet solutions for enterprise application and network performance analysis, today announced that Nashville, Tennessee -based Vanderbilt University has recently deployed the Sniffer InfiniStream™ solution to gain a new level of visibility into its network. A longtime user of Network General Sniffer® Distributed, Vanderbilt will use the combined solution to discover illegal traffic, identify the source of a security attack and troubleshoot unexplained network behavior – all while eliminating downtime for university staff and students.

Since 1873, Vanderbilt University is an internationally recognized research university combining cutting-edge research, liberal arts and a distinguished medical center. Vanderbilt is the largest private employer in middle Tennessee and the second largest private employer based in the state. With more than 30,000 users, 10 schools and a renowned medical center relying on the network on a daily basis, the Vanderbilt IT Department is tasked with providing the highest levels of network performance and security possible in an extremely open academic computing environment.

"Vanderbilt is renown for recruiting many of the world's best and brightest," said Daniel A. Bachrach, network design and engineering manager at Vanderbilt University. "Among those, come a lot of creative mischief-makers that may include hackers and other cyber criminals. Network General's products enable us to provide the highest levels of performance and security on the university's massive network, allowing us to quickly identify and solve a myriad of challenges that are unique to the academic computing environment."

The Network General Sniffer InfiniStream solution combined with Sniffer Distributed allows Vanderbilt's four-person network management and engineering team to address network performance and security issues with speed and accuracy. For example, when throughput dropped by 75 percent, Vanderbilt was able to use the Sniffer InfiniStream product to pinpoint the problem and the end user that was improperly using the network. In addition, when security issues arise that threaten the network, the Sniffer InfiniStream product provides the network team with precise information that can be turned directly over to law enforcement.

"The level of insight Network General provides into our network allows us to extract the detailed information we need to deliver optimal network security and performance," Bachrach continued.   "We are exceptionally happy with the performance and resolution capabilities the Sniffer InfiniStream solution delivers in a very complex, open network environment. Sniffer InfiniStream has proved to be an invaluable tool for handling both the big picture and everyday network issues."
