Network General Announces MultiSegment Intelligence 4.0

Visibility of Application Flows across Multiple Network Segments Enables Instinctual Troubleshooting to Solve Complex Performance Issues

MIAMI, NOVEMBER 7, 2005, SNIFFER USER SUMMIT 2005 Network General, the global leader in enterprise network and application performance analysis, today announced the general availability of Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence 4.0, a new software product that uniquely enables the data capture, inspection, analysis and rapid resolution of complex performance issues found in multi-tiered, Web-based applications.  Targeted at environments that commonly generate https and SQL traffic, such as Oracle, IBM DB2, MySQL, and Microsoft SQL Server, it enables users to precisely identify which application tier or transaction is suffering from performance problems.  Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence employs patent-pending algorithms that correlate front-end to back-end transactions, mimicking the deductive logic and thought process typically employed by senior network engineers to solve multifaceted network performance issues.

Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence dramatically simplifies and automates the tedious, manual, process typically required to pinpoint the source of application performance issues, allowing first-year network professionals to solve problems that previously demanded the expertise of a senior engineer. This is accomplished through a simple three-step process. First, Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence discovers and analyzes application flows across multiple network segments, then presents network latency and application turn times across the various segments.  Next, it provides a front- and back-end transaction summary and details for captured traffic.  This is applicable to multi-tiered web applications that commonly generate http/s and SQL traffic.  Finally, Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence incorporates comparative reporting, which enables users to verify that network configuration adjustments have effected the desired result on network traffic.  The solutions comprehensive reporting functionality provides printable proof points that network and applications managers can use to collaboratively solve application performance issues.  Multiple types of display filters enable users to drill down into the necessary information.

Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence significantly reduces the amount of time it would otherwise take to trace out flows on a packet-by-packet basis, said Nick Rascona, Senior MNO Engineer at Sprint. It will definitely boost my productivity. I also like the filtering mechanisms and different ways that Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence displays data; I can use these capabilities to examine traffic flows in very specific, granular ways.

Network General eliminates the skills barrier between a good network and applications engineer and a great one, said Sangram Dange, Product Manager at Network General.  Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence automatically correlates data between traces, exponentially reducing the time required to determine the root cause of application performance and allowing less-experienced network managers to solve network and application performance issues that were previously handled manually by only the most seasoned network expert.

Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence captures in a software product a capability found only in the best network technicians: instinctual troubleshooting analysis, echoed Jason Poley, Lead Network Technician for the County of Santa Barbara.  "It provides a flow of data capture, inspection, analysis and resolution that will greatly decrease the amount of time I spend analyzing traces.  Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence is versatile enough to handle any application running across our backbone."

Sniffer MultiSegment Intelligence can collect data from any Sniffer instrument, including Sniffer Portable, Sniffer Distributed and Sniffer InfiniStream, which can be used to analyze a wide range of standard application traffic types as well as custom applications.
