Optimus Selects NetScout Systems to Improve Performance of Wireless Internet Service
NetScout's E3 ATM Probe Monitors Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and Provides Insight into Customer's Usage Patterns
WESTFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000-- NetScout(R) Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTCT) today announced that its recently released E3 ATM Probe has been selected by leading European mobile communications provider, Optimus Telecommunications, to improve the performance of its wireless Internet service. Optimus is using the NetScout probe to track the level of customer traffic generated by the wireless application protocol (WAP), the leading edge standard that delivers Internet access via mobile phones. Combined with NetScout software, AppScout(TM) and NetScout Manager Plus(TM), the E3 ATM Probe enables Optimus to measure application response time, track network utilization and monitor bandwidth consumption.
"As a wireless service provider, we offer a wide variety of services, such as a mobile Internet connection through WAP. It is imperative that we understand how our customers are using our services, and how much bandwidth is being consumed at any given time," said Joao Horta, network administrator at Optimus. "The NetScout solution ensures we have the information needed to provide the highest level of service to our customers."
Optimus began using NetScout's solutions in August 1999 to monitor its wide area and remote office networks and has now extended their use of the NetScout system to monitor its internal network. Headquartered in Portugal, Optimus is part of a large and growing network of mobile communications companies such as France Telecom, ETG, Maxtel and Sonae.
"As the market for WAP enabled smart phones continues to grow, so does the need to monitor and manage this standard over the network backbone," said Anil Singhal, chairman and chief executive officer, NetScout Systems. "With the NetScout solution, Optimus will be able to identify usage per phone number, track application responsiveness and service levels from Internet providers and ensure the availability and reliability that customers demand."
According to analyst firm, Strategy Analytics, approximately 95 percent of mobile phones shipped to the United States and Western Europe in 2003 will be Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-enabled. The WAP Forum (www.wapforum.org), which represents 90% of the world's handset manufacturers, predicts there will be 10 million devices available in Europe by the end of the year 2000.
