White Paper Abstract: NetworkWorld Special Report -Recommendations for Implementing and Managing Converged Networks
by Jim Metzler and Steven Taylor
The movement to deploy voice over IP (VoIP) is going through some fundamental changes. Initially, the prime motivation for deploying VoIP was reducing the cost of long-distance phone calls. While that is still an important factor, today many organizations are looking to deploy VoIP because is also enables them to provide a wide range of capabilities that previously were either not technically or not economicall feasible.
To support VoIP and other demanding applications successfully, IT organizations need to change their approach to network management. IT organizations must develop an approach that is less fragmented. One characteristic of this new approach is that it allows for the use of management dat afrom multiple sources. A second characteristic of the new approach is that it consists of few, more tightly integrated tools.
